What is a pressure sprayer?

An extremely handy garden tool, the pressure sprayer is a quick and easy way to administer plant feed or nematodes to your garden. Ideal for use in areas with no water supply, large pressure sprayers are widely used to deliver targeted weed control to planting areas.

The main container is accessed through a screw top lid, which sometimes features a manual pump mechanism with a pressure valve and spray wand. The trigger mechanism can vary between a thumb trigger, a piston trigger and a valve trigger. Thumb triggers are exclusive to smaller, hand-held sprayers, while piston and valve triggers frequently appear on medium to large sprayers.

Pressure sprayer types

Pressure sprayers are available in a range of sizes to suit all applications. Tank capacities range from 2 litres to 20 litres and can feature backpack designs for heavier, more industrial applications. Some styles feature a trolley design with wheels and a handle, while manual pump designs vary between a lever and a piston.

• Thumb trigger   -   Widely used to apply pest control or to mist plant leaves

• Manual trigger   -   Controlled squeezing action for a wide spray application

• Valve trigger   -   Allows for continuous flow and water-saving action.

Considerations when choosing a pressure sprayer

Litre capacity - the size of your application and the frequency of use will be the deciding factor for capacity.

Type - smaller requirements allow for hand-held sprayers. However, for heavier applications, a trolley or backpack design would be a good choice.

Trigger type - for more direct spraying, a trigger or thumb spray is ideal, whereas a valve trigger allows for continuous spray over a wide area.

Application - Small pressure sprayers are ideal for more localised applications, while larger sprayers treat a wide surface area.

FAQs

How much pressure does a garden sprayer need?

The pressure required for each sprayer is dependent on the size of the tank. When first using a garden sprayer the tank must be pressurised using the pump action until the pressure valve starts to hiss. Once the liquid flow of the sprayer begins to falter top-up pumps are required to maintain the pressure in the tank.

How does a pressurised garden sprayer work?

Garden sprayers feature a pump system to build-up internal pressure in the tank and hose. Once the pressure is released by the trigger mechanism, liquid is forced out of the sprayer until the air pressure dissipates and the sprayer must be pumped again.
