What are floodlights?

Floodlights are high intensity, portable lights that are predominantly used to illuminate broad spaces, inside or outside in a variety of different environments.

Why floodlights?

It is easy to take light for granted in a traditional office setting, but in various outdoor and indoor environments, natural light and infrastructure are not always available. Floodlights allow work to be carried out in such environments, illuminating wide expanses with a bright light. They make working in dimly lit environments safe, and can be easily transported from station to station, allowing for a reliable and stress-free option if a team is working on multiple locations, for example. Furthermore, floodlights are excellent security options, with a combination of a light and a CCTV camera being an apt security defence for workshops, warehouses and general workplaces.

Floodlight types

There are several different types of floodlights that we offer. They are all suited for different purposes.

Portable   -   Portable floodlights are incredibly versatile and easy to transport. They are ideal for use in a broad variety of environments and are manufactured to be durable.

Handheld   -   Handheld floodlights are ideal for concentrated light in tighter spaces, such as garages, attics and workshops. These lights are still suitable for use in the outdoors as well as indoors.

Light with Sensor   -   Certain floodlights are fitted with light sensors. When they detect motion in an area, the light output is triggered. This functionality makes them ideal for security use in car parks, large offices and households.

Considerations when choosing a floodlight

• Intended use - Consider what you want to use the floodlight for. When working in open spaces at night in a team, a powerful, portable light would be an ideal choice. Unmanned car parks would require a light with a sensor equipped, while handheld lights are perfect for tight indoor spaces.

• Bulb type - When choosing a floodlight, consider the type of bulb it has. LEDs are the most popular form of bulb, providing a clean, efficient and bright light that can illuminate wide areas. COB LED bulbs are a technological step up from LEDs, being brighter, more efficient and with a higher quality beam. Halogen bulbs are small, lightweight, cost effective and are incredibly long lasting.

• Luminosity - Different lumen levels produce varying levels of brightness and colour. Ensure that the brightness of the light matches the intended use of the light, so that it isn't too bright or dim.

Floodlights jargon buster

We want to make it easy for you, so here are some key terms that will help you understand the range and applications a little better.

What is the IP rating?

An IP or Ingress Protection code classifies the level of protection provided by an enclosure or protective casing. The rating is made up of 2 numbers together, which provide information as to the protection against solid particles and liquids. For example, the first '6' in IP66 relates to the degree of solid particle protection, which in this case is full resistance to dust and other similar particulates. The second '6' relates to the degree of protection from liquids, which in this case is protection from water jets with a nozzle of up to 12.5mm. Ensure to do some research on the IP rating of your floodlight before purchasing.

FAQs

Are floodlights adjustable?

Generally, most floodlights have adjustable stands so that the beam angle can be changed depending on the intended use. This makes floodlights excellent for illuminating hard to reach areas.

How are floodlights powered?

Floodlights are generally powered in three different ways: through plugged in cables, a rechargeable battery or a replaceable battery. Each option has its own advantages and suitabilities. Ensure to get the right power source for your intended use.
