If you need to test the hardness of an alloy, quenched or unquenched steel you will need an anvil and indentor to measure the Rockwell A, B or C unit of measurement. Cromwell stock a selection of anvils and indentors manufactured by Oxford.

Why Anvils & Indentors?

Indentation hardness tests are used in mechanical engineering to test the hardness of a material before it deforms. The anvil is used as a solid support for the materials being tested and the indentor is the instrument used to apply the pressure.

Anvil & Indentor types

Using the correct anvil and indetor will ensure the accuracy of the test. The anvil is used for supporting the test material during the hardness test, while the indentor is used for testing the materials hardness.

Flat Anvil For use for small or large test materials that are flat.

V-notch Anvil For use with cylindrical shaped rods or tubing.

Diamond Indent For use in microhardness testing, measured using light loads and leaving an indentation in the material which is then measured and converted into a hardness value.

Ball Bearing Indent For use testing ball bearings to determine whether the materials meet the hardness requirements or to analyse specific reasons for bearing failures by measuring hardness.
